Foundation Portfolio evaluation

Preliminary Task

Names of group members:
Matt Finnegan, Ryan Boylan, Saul Higgins, Amy Timpson

What did you learn about the cameras and editing software during the preliminary task?
We learnt how to use a digital camera successfully and various video editing software such as final cut pro. We learnt how to put music onto our film and how to add subtitles. We edited certain scenes of the film to make them slower to create a dramatic effect. We also learnt how to cut scenes to remove any unwanted film. We added appropriate music to the film also. We learned how to use the camera and tripod to get a steady shot, this made sure the camera was not shaky or uneven. We learned a lot about the editing software, for example how to put our scenes together and how to make them run smoothly.

In the filming and editing of your project, what worked well and what could have been improved?
We could have given a different variety of shot types to improve. We found that the editing part of the project went well, as we added music and cut some scenes easily.we could have hand held the camera to get shots as in improvement.

Give a detailed, specific example of how you have used a shot/ reverse shot combination in your film

An example of this is when the camera was facing matt to show his expression and then it switched to saul to show his expression. We used this to effectivly show both of their expressions clearly as they were talking to each other. We found positioning the camera easy.

Give a detailed, specific example of how you achieved match cuts during the editing process

An example of this is when we shot sauls hand opening the door and then matched this by showing him walking through the door.

How did you make sure that you didn’t break the 180 degree rule? Or if you broke it, what have you learnt from this?

We made sure we didn’t do this by not going over 180 degrees when filming a person, for example we would keep to the left or right side of a person when filming another person opposite.we made sure not to break this rule so the people didn’t switch places.
